PROJECT 12

4: MAKING A

TEMPLATE Draw on your diagram where the arms will be placed so that they are evenly spaced. Remember, this is a handcrafted item so does not have to be absolutely precise. This will be used as a template to establish where to start forming each arm, as they will all be made from one single strand of wire. As an idea, you could do four arms and use them to form a Tudor cross shape.

5: THE FIRST ARM This fi rst arm is made on the inner circle of wire using the long tails. Please note that the top of this arm will not be joined, the other fi ve you will make will be one continuous piece. The image shows the leg of the arm, and the shaping of the branch. When you have bent the wire back so you can continue to make the head of the arm you will fi nd that the two wires do not sit closely together. Carefully use your fl at nose pliers and with gentle squeezing movements close up the gap. It is better to make many small movements than to try and do it in one big movement.

THE BEND When you reach the top of the arm, make a bend upwards with the tail, this will then be ready to form the bail. The other arms that you make will be one continuous form. Repeat on the other side so you have a mirror image. This is your inner circle complete.

7: MAKING

MORE ARMS Cut a 50cm length of 20 gauge wire (this converts to approximately 0.8mm wire). Find the centre point and make a gentle bend. You will be working out from this point.

The centre mark will be the fi rst arm you make. Then you will make a further two arms either side of this centre arm.
