Heavenly mills

A

s one of the jewellery maker’s most important bits of kit, without rolling mills it would simply be

impossible to turn out those heavenly jewellery pieces! And Cookson’s range of high-quality rolling mills will provide years of service reducing your Copper, Silver and Brass sheet stock, along with other non-ferrous metals, into a variety of sheet metal gauge thicknesses. We also supply wire mills which are used with a wire draw bench and drawplates to reduce the diameter of wire.

Performing many roles. Rolling mills are an essential weapon in the small to medium-sized jewellery maker’s arsenal. The rolling mill is quite a simple machine that shares a great deal in common with a mangle.

MINIMILL - 100MM MINI 80mm x 6mm sheet maximum, 4 x ‘d’ shaped grooves

Only £477.25 999 AXV

The jeweller’s rolling mill will have steel rollers to compress the metal, changing the gauge or even its shape, for example turning a circle into an oval. As a rough guide, when halving the thickness of sheet you’ll double the length (if rolling in one direction). Rolling should be a gradual process and the resulting compression of the metal will mean that the metal will harden. So the metal will need to be annealed in between each stage of rolling.

In addition to rolling sheet, many of the mills available from Cookson can roll wires into square or D-shaped sections, ideal for creating a tapered or shaped eff ect.

Smaller mills, with just one pair of rollers, are ideal for the small or home workshop.

Larger and automatic mills are available for the larger workshop.

All mills must be secured to a fi rm and steady surface with many manufacturers recommending a purpose-made stand bolted to the fl oor.
