Quintessentially English, distinctively Claire.
Designer Claire English, who won the fi nal prize in Professional Jewellers Treasure and Jewellery Show London, draws inspiration from objects around her and her own extraordinary imagination. Some of her quirky work, such as the irreverent Bubble Blower Necklace, plays on childhood memories, while her new collection is based upon words that begin with ‘M’ in Alice in Wonderland, from matchsticks and mice to magpie claws.

and Metroland. What’s inspiring us this month.

The range features turquoise-coloured stones, gold coloured metals and black accents built into big statement cuff s, many in the shape of snakes and lizards.

The Thirties are back!
Just as the Hurting Thirties followed the madcap excesses of the Roaring Twenties with mass belt-tightening, swingeing cuts and a vivid explosion of colour and form in the visual arts to cheer everyone up, so the latest global recession has brought with it its own vibrant and glamorous trend in jewellery. Call it Cocktail Culture, call it Metroland Chic, call it Superbling, call it a cheer up call for hard times, the fact is that jewellery has come out of the blues corner fi ghting with big statement rings reminiscent of the cocktail rings that fi rst put in an appearance in the 30’s. Styles come in everything from bizarre bottle designs to some that look good enough to eat with fruity concoctions cut into orange segments! This is jewellery that really is designed to stop the traffi c with big bold statements, animal passions and masses of devil-may-care bling. Check it out and enjoy before the upturn ushers in something altogether more modest!

Pedigree metals emerge from the doghouse!
The signs are that precious metals might fi nally be due for a comeback after their period in the doldrums of rising prices. Of course, the irresistible allure of materials which have been coveted since ancient times will never go away for good. However, it’s fair to say that the excitement caused by the May year-on- year fi gures showing a 7.6% rise with the number of gold items being hallmarked rising by 30% has been dampened somewhat by the June fi gure dropping by 15% based on 2011 fi gures. The overriding message, then, is that the market is still volatile. Watch this space for more details!
