WOMEN IN WELDING

like home. “However not every place is happy with women in the shop. I am lucky to have colleagues that really appreciate me.” Marleen does feel there are some actions which could be taken, At school she suggests there should be a workshop for everyone and that people, both men and women should encouraged to become welders as there are simply not enough. Her size has also been a problem but she also believes that continued progress with technology means that heavy equipment is not such a problem.

Marleen does have a number of wishes which she hopes readers of Welding World will take notice of. “Clothes are a major issue for me. Fire resistant clothes are simply too big and not designed specifically for women. It is my biggest issue in the world! “I would also like to say to everyone, especially at the moment, to be strong and that you are never alone. Social media has shown me that there are a lot of girls like me, girls that love their jobs and live with a smile and enjoy anything they love. To everyone, you are stronger than you think!” ■

Speaking to Welding World Marleen said: “I am happy with the place I am at right now. I want to get some more certificates in the future and learn to

weld more difficult stuff. I also love the teaching part so maybe something in that direction as well. “I love to work with the new students and new colleagues. To teach them how to weld for the first time and how to make some great pipeweld. The shop I work in is my happy place, my colleagues are the best and it really feels
