The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) - supports national and international efforts to research, prevent, and reduce the impacts of marine debris. The MDP serves as a centralized capability within NOAA, coordinating and supporting activities within NOAA and with other federal agencies, as well as using partnerships to support projects carried out by state and local agencies, tribes, non-governmental organizations, academia, and industry. 1. Collect data over time and correlate it to weather events or changes in accumulation. 2. Advertise and host a Coastal Clean-up Day in conjunction with a local sailing group. Nationally, this day is held the 3rd Saturday of September.
3. Ask your sailing center, yacht club or marina how they are limiting the amount of marine debris in their area. Report back to the group.
4. Contact your local Natural Resources Division, EPA department, NOAA agency for support, resources.
5. Mark your storm drains and participate in World Water Day activities.
6. Create a poster to submit to the annual Keep the Sea Free of Debris contest (NOAA) or to post around their schools to increase awareness of the issue
7. Design and share a Call to Action or a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for prevention of marine debris and ways students can be stewards of the seas
8. Download the Rozalia Project Data Collection app. Develop deliberate opportunities to collect marine debris regularly; record data and submit
9. Sailors for the Sea – for sailing centers, consider becoming a Green Regatta site. 82
