Edison Sailing Center in Fort Myers, Florida partnered with St. Michael Lutheran School implementing Reach to approximately 130 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade (middle school) students, co-taught by sailing instructors and a regular education science teacher in the classroom, outdoors, and on the water. The Reach program will be incorporated into the Summer 2013 by providing a full day of Reach training to the NESS Sailing Instructors. The goal is to have the instructors thinking about classes with the modules in mind, with academic vocabulary in addition to sailing slang and how to teach a class that can fulfill educational standards while having fun. As an example, instead of just showing ropes and pulleys as the “parts of the boat” lesson, Instructors will be encouraged to use the “simple machines” module. The idea is that it should be an easy transition for expe- rienced instructors to modify the lessons they already do to meet the academic standards of the Reach program.
The Reach program is a curriculum that truly supports NESS’s goals to kindle more than a pass- ing interest in these students’ understanding of how sailing and marine science can connect them to the world around them including science, technology, engineering and math; give student groups a chance to participate in team-building and adventure education both activities that are normally unavailable or inaccessible to them; to enable students to develop a sense of self-discovery and ac- complishment in sailing their own boat, paddling a kayak and experiencing the sea as a lens to a lifetime of learning.
Case 3: Edison Sailing Center – Fort Myers, FL
Edison has integrated Reach into all of their sailing programs serving 400-500 students annually. Edison implements Reach utilizing the co-teach and sailing center implementation models. They co-teach Reach with science teachers from their local private schools during school time. They bring boats and sails to the schools and work with the teachers to implement the land based and classroom activities followed by one or two field trip where they apply the concepts from the modules on the water and implement a few on the water module parts.
Edison runs year round on the water sailing programs and has integrated a minimum of one part of each module to all classes exposing hundreds of students to STEM education and the sport of sailing annually.
