John O’Flaherty has served as Executive Director of Community Boating Center in Providence, RI since 2004 and helped launch CBC in 1994 as Board VP. John learned to sail at East Greenwich Yacht Club becoming racing coach, and Head Instructor. John is a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor. Earning a BS in marketing, he served as Commodore/Head Sailing Instructor at the University of Rhode Island. After running a 180’ motor yacht as First Mate and helicopter pilot in the Caribbean, John led marketing for Schaefer Marine, a medical manufacturer, and as VP Corporate Development for an advertising agency. John, wife Mia, and daughter Ciana live in Edgewood, RI.


Katie Schlotterbeck has been teaching middle school science at St. Michael Lutheran School in Fort Myers, Florida for the past 30 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, majoring in education, environmental sciences and physical education. Katie is married with two sons. She has been recognized by the Florida Center for Teachers as an outstanding educator, and received the Golden Apple Award from SMLS. She also received the Florida Georgia Middle School Distinguished Educator Award from the Lutheran Education Association and was part of a professional delegation that travelled to China to study science education. She has professional memberships in NSTA, FAST and LEA. Under her leadership, SMLS has been recognized as a Green School by the US Forest Service and a model PLT school for over 10 years. She has had students participate in Engineering competitions, STEM competitions, and in regional and state Science Fairs for over 30 years.


Jessica Servis is the Reach Program Manager at US Sailing. She earned a M.A. in Special Education from Rowan University. Previously she was the Executive Director at Just-Sailing in New Jersey. She is also a certified special education teacher in the state of New Jersey and has over 15 years of formal and informal teaching experience. She is a US Sailing Level 1 instructor and was a member of the Salisbury University Sailing Team and the undergraduate representative for MAISA.


Stephanie Webb a lifelong educator and learner, Stephanie, along with husband Ross Webb, oversees the programs, grants, training, and activities for Edison Sailing Center. Stephanie has participated in the design and development of state and national programs for educators, and continues to support professional learning that results in increased student achievement. She serves on US Sailing’s Community Sailing Committee, assists with the coordination of Edison’s participation as a US Powerboat Training Center, supports new youth (sailing) program development, and has been a presenter at US Sailing’s NSPS. Stephanie sees the Reach Program as the logical step in the evolution of sailing at higher cognitive and authentic levels of instruction.


Mark Zagol is the Sailing Program Director at New England Science and Sailing.He graduated from Old Dominion University where he was a two-time Collegiate All-American sailor. Mark was part of the winning team at ODU in 1998 when it captured both the ICSA Team Race National Championship as well as the Coed Dinghy National Championships winning B-division. Prior to coming to NESS, Mark coached some of America’s best sailors at the United States Coast Guard Academy, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and Old Dominion University. Mark remains very active in the sailing community sailing Vanguard 15s, Mumm 30s, Melges 24s, J/22s and 505s. One of the best sailing coaches in the country, Mark is a US Sailing Level 3 Coach and USCG OUPV Captain.
