Preparing Yourself for Sailing HYDRATION
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or sport drinks. Staying hydrated helps to fend off many heat emergencies and keeps you functioning at a high level. Through perspiration you will lose a lot of fluid while you are out on the water, so be sure to bring something to drink. Water is the best choice.
DITTY BAG
A sailor keeps tools, a knife, spare parts, a whistle, extra line and other useful parts, pieces and safety devices in a small pouch called a ditty bag. Since you may be out on the water for longer stretches, having the resources to repair small prob- lems will keep you sailing. Instructors will often carry these items for their sailing class, but if you are without that type of support, bring your own ditty bag.
