CHAPTER 5 BODY POSITION

E Side-to-Side Position for Upwind E Side-to-Side Position for Downwind E Fore and Aft Position for Upwind E Fore and Aft Position for Downwind E Hiking Techniques E Holding the Tiller Extension and Mainsheet E Handling Lines

TIP

ETo learn proper fore and aft trim, try sitting as far forward and aft as pos- sible so you can see the extremes. Remember to adjust your position as conditions change!

For a beginning sailor, just having the boat upright can be a success. As a sailor improves there is more to consider about body position to sail a boat well. Where you choose to sit and move while sailing will impact how fast a boat will move and how comfortable everyone will be onboard. Learning how to use your weight and position in the boat enables you to sail the boat properly and quickly. Depending on wind strength, environmental conditions and the boat you are sailing, your body position will help keep your boat sailing in optimum balance.

SIDE-TO-SIDE POSITION FOR UPWIND

Most sailboats, with the exception of boats that have a hard chine, sail upwind best when they are nearly or completely flat and not heeling. A nearly vertical centerboard or daggerboard does its best job in preventing a sailboat from slipping sideways, allowing you the most significant progress toward your windward destination.

To keep the boat flat, the skipper and crew adjust their weight from one side of the boat to the other, depending on how strong the wind is blowing.
