CHAPTER 10 NAVIGATION & RULES OF THE ROAD

E Navigation E Navigation Aids E Rules of the Road

NAVIGATION The “road map” sailors use on the water is called a chart. A chart identifies all the critical information mariners need to safely navigate a boat on the water including obstacles to avoid, such as shallow water and rocks, traffic channels with lane markers, and deep channels with strong currents. There are also areas where you can sail without concern for these types of obstacles. Reading a chart may take a little getting used to, but understanding the fundamentals will keep you safe. Charts also indicate the depth of the water, which is measured in feet, meters, or fathoms. When venturing out onto rivers, harbors, bays and the open ocean, it is important to understand charts and aids to navigation so you can safely reach your destination.

NAVIGATION AIDS Navigation aids are fixed objects, such as buoys and lighthouses, used for navigation. These markers fall into two general categories: lateral and non-lateral markers.

TIP

1 meter = 3.28 feet 1 fathom = 6 feet
