Introduction

Learn Sailing Right! Intermediate Sailing is about sailing faster and smarter with greater confidence. As an intermediate sailor, you no longer need to think about how to tack, return to the dock or rig your boat. These maneuvers are now as natural as breathing to you. It will start to become apparent to you that rigging a boat, tacking, and returning to the dock are not separate skills, but everything is interrelated. Where sailing is simplified for beginners as they learn fundamental skills and concepts, intermediate sailors are ready for deeper explanations and some of the details behind how a sailboat works.

As an intermediate sailor, you will use the science of how a boat moves and how sails function to improve your boat performance. You will learn and practice more complex maneuvers, develop new skills and learn how to use new sail controls. As an intermediate sailor you can expect longer sessions out sailing as you perfect your skills and maneuvers.

The first section of Learn Sailing Right! Intermediate Sailing introduces sailors to concepts and theories on how a sailboat works. In the first chapters—Preparing Yourself for Sailing (chapter 1), Wind, Weather, Tides and Currents (chapter 2), Sail Shape and Controls (chapter 3), How Sailing Works (chapter 4), and Body Position and Boat Balance (chapter 5)—you will learn the reasons why a sailboat moves and how to make it move more efficiently.

In the next section, you will be introduced to more advanced boathandling skills and rigging techniques as you implement the concepts and theories introduced in the first section of the book.

These chapters include Close Hauled and Upwind Sailing (chapter 6) and Jibing Techniques and Downwind Sailing (chapter 7), which cover techniques and skills for improved upwind and downwind sailing.

Finally, the remaining chapters will teach intermediate sailors about safety, seamanship and self-rescuing skills in Rigging and Seamanship chapter 8),
