Glossary
Vang Sheeting- A technique to flatten the sail by reducing draft and minimizing power to make the boat more stable and controllable.
Walkover (Dry) Capsize- Designed for singlehanded and doublehanded boats, allowing sailors to right the boat faster, avoid turtling and, less importantly, stay dry.
Weather Helm- The boat’s tendency to turn to windward caused by too much power in the mainsail, mostly in strong or puffy conditions.
Wind Shadows- Areas of less wind, usually caused by land effects or large anchored ships.
Wind Shifts- The constant changing of direction of wind.
Wind Velocity- The speed of the wind; measured in miles per hour (mph) or nautical miles per hour (knots).
Windward Heel- The tipping of a boat toward the wind due to pressure of the wind and body weight placement, especially when sailing downwind.
