Choral
What A Friend We Have in Jesus, Matthew Weaver,
Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers) MSM 50-6137, 2020, solo and SATB a cappella. Tis is the familiar text and tune arranged in 12/8 meter
which provides a light gospel feel (as marked on the music) to this anthem. Te message of this hymn relates well to the gospel lesson for this particular Sunday (John 15: 9-17). Te soloist sings the melody with the choir singing “back up” to the soloist. Given the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic in my area, I may not yet be able to have my choir singing on the Festival of the Christian Home Sunday (May 9, 2021) but I will be having a solo- ist sing the melody line and I will play the choral part as accompaniment. I encourage you to do the same if you find yourself in a similar situation or if you do not have a four- part choir (or adequate preparation time).
General God Created Life for Living, Wayne L. Wold, Augsburg
Fortress 978-1-5064-4727-8, 2018, SATB and organ. Te words and music by Wold are written in hymn form
with interludes between each stanza. Tere is an optional unison congregation part for stanzas 1 and 5 provided on
the last page of the anthem with permission granted for duplication of the page when the anthem is sung in wor- ship. Stanza 1 has the choir in unison, stanza 2 has unison SA and unison TB for various phrases, stanza 3 is in SATB form, as is stanza 4 in a different key, with stanza 5 back in the original key with ATB on unison melody and sopra- nos singing an optional descant. Tis is an excellent text – “God created life for living, filled the world abundantly. Creatures, each unique and giſted, herald God’s diversity.” – and is easily learned by an SATB choir.
All the Good You Can, Howard
Goodall, MorningStar Music Pub- lishers MSM-56-0110, 2019, SATB and organ. Optional handbell (5 bells in 2-octave range), piano, and organ parts (MSM-56-0110B) and full score (MSM-56-0110A) available. Tis is an anthem based on the
Charles Wesley hymn and written by a well-known British composer of choral
music. Te melody is introduced by the sopranos and altos in unison before the choral parts divide into four parts with the option of the congregation joining. (Reproducible congregational parts are available by way of free down- load.) Tis would be a good option for Heritage Sunday (May 23, 2021).

cations (a division of MorningStar Publishers) MSM-50- 6144, 2020, SATB and piano. Tis is an arrangement by Pederson of the text and tune
of the African American spiritual Kum Ba Yah. While not a difficult anthem, it does require an SATB choir and will require preparation time because of some interesting rhythms that are introduced.
Rejoice, O Pilgrim Trong! (Rejoice, Ye Pure in
Heart!), Michael Burkhardt, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Publishers) MSM-50-6194, 2020, SATB and organ with optional soprano descant and con- gregation. Optional brass quartet and 3-octave handbells parts (MSM-50-6194B) and full score (MSM-50-6194A) available. Tis is a festive arrangement of the familiar hymn text
by Edward H. Plumptre (slightly altered) and the tune Marion. Te choral part is easily learned with stanzas 1 and 2 in unison, two-part mixed voices in stanza 3, stanza 4 in SATB form, stanza 5 unison men, stanza 6 unison women and stanza 7 unison voices with optional soprano descant. However, the anthem does require an organist with at least moderate skills, particularly if the brass quar- tet is not used.
