Day of Pentecost Come, Dove of Heaven, Mark A. Miller, words by
Adam M.L. Tice, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers) MSM-50-5023, 2019, SATB and piano. Tis is a quiet, prayerful anthem with voice parts in moderate ranges and easily learned.
Gathered and Sent, Rory Cooney, GIA Publications G-8782, 2015, SAB and keyboard. Guitar part (G-8782G) also available. Tis is composed in verse-refrain form with two verses.
Te verses have the sopranos singing the text and melody with altos and basses only singing “oo.” If you have limited vocal resources, everyone could sing with the sopranos on the verses. Te refrain does require 3-parts, with the men dividing for the last five notes of the anthem; if you have limited men, you could have all the men sing the upper voice for the last five notes (which is what happens in the first refrain). Te congregation can sing on the refrain; a reproducible part is included in the anthem.
Come Down, O Love Divine, Stephen Caracciolo, Bir-
namwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers) MSM-50-5557, 2018, SATB and organ. Tis uses the traditional text by Bianco of Siena found
in our United Methodist Hymnal (UMH 475), set to the tune Veni Creator Spiritus. Tis is not a difficult anthem but will require more preparation time by most choirs than the two aforementioned suggestions.
O Holy Spirit, Enter In, Robert A. Hobby, Birnam-
wood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Pub- lishers) MSM-60-5021, 2018, SATB and organ. Optional brass quartet and timpani parts (MSM-60-5021B) and full score (MSM-60-5021A) available. Tis is a festive anthem utilizing the tune Wie Schön
Leuchtet that can use any combination of the resources you have available – four-part choir, organ, brass quartet, timpani, and congregation. Tere is a long introduction for organ or organ and instruments but options are provided for a shorter version. Verse 1 has unison choir; verse 2 is a four-part setting of the hymn tune followed by an inter- lude. Te final verse uses altos, tenors, and basses in unison on the melody with sopranos singing a descant.
Trinity Sunday Most Holy, Chris de Silva, GIA
Publications G-9496, 2017, SAB and keyboard with optional C instrument (part included). Tis anthem is written in verse-
refrain format with the four verses sung by a soloist or unison voice part or unison choir. Te refrain – “God the Father, Son and Spirit, Holy
Blessed Trinity; God, the Father, Son and Spirit, Tree in One most Holy” – is written in three-part mixed voices. Te reproducible congregation part is included in the anthem if you choose to have them sing with the choir. Tis is not a familiar tune for the congregation. However, the sopranos sing the congregational melody. Tere is an 11-measure coda SAB section that follows the last refrain.
Festival of the Christian Home A Place Called Home, Michael Joncas, GIA Publica-
tions G-9114, 2016, SATB and organ. Tis is an original text by Joncas paired with the Si-
belius hymn tune Finlandia. Te first part has the choir in unison; the next part is two-part mixed, with the third part in SATB form. Te final part is written with altos and basses singing melody and the sopranos and the tenors each singing a descant part. You can use this anthem with an SAB choir by eliminating the tenor descant on the last section and even the soprano descant if you do not have sopranos who can comfortably sing on high F and high G for several measures. As is oſten the case with GIA anthems, there is a repro-
ducible congregation part included. Since this is a familiar tune for most congregations, you may want to have them join the choir on certain verses.
