M
y family has lived on this plot of ground since 1846. Except for 22 of my 81
years, I have resided here, walking the creekbeds, woodlands, fields and riv- erbanks. Well before 1846, indigenous people fished and hunted and gathered and took pleasure in this rich land. I confess that in my childhood, my eyes and ears and understanding were sharper. As an adult, I have been reminded of
a verse: “Listen you foolish and sense- less people, who have eyes but don’t see and ears but don’t hear” (Jeremiah 5:21). Not until 2013, when I took up my
camera as a spiritual discipline, did my eyes open, and my ears hear, and my heart understand as when I was a child. Only then, retired from working in worship and music in the church, did I come to fully appreciate all those parables that Jesus told about fig trees, mustard seeds, times and seasons.
