A taste of SPAIN

SABOR

For top Spanish cuisine, pop into these standout restaurants, each of them a recipient of the ‘Restaurants from Spain’ quality seal

London’s Spanish food scene just keeps on giving. T ese four restaurants in particular have managed to deliver the fl avours and aromas of typical Spanish dishes so successfully, they’ll have you thinking you’re at a tapas bar somewhere in Barcelona, feasting on prawn fritters. From tapas served in art galleries to Michelin-starred dishes eaten at the counter, we’ve rounded up some of the best places to enjoy authentic Spanish fare across the city.

José Pizarro at the Royal Academy of Arts José Pizarro at the Royal Academy of Arts is the chef’s fi rst foray into Mayfair. Set within the Senate Room of this prestigious Piccadilly address, the restaurant has views of Burlington Gardens, sash windows, high ceilings and art-clad walls. It’s relaxed yet buzzy, and the ideal spot for a glass of wine and some delicious tapas. You’ll fi nd a selection of hot and cold plates including small dishes to start, tapas, larger tapas dishes and salads. While all of the food comes highly recommended, standout plates include the spicy prawn fritters with lemon allioli and the cheese selection, which comes with pear compote and quince.

T ere’s a reduced menu on off er from 3.30pm, which includes a selection of tapas and desserts — don’t miss the Basque cheesecake with strawberries. josepizarro.com/venues/ jose-pizarro-royal-academy-arts

Barrafi na Borough Yards With outlets across Soho, King’s Cross and Covent Garden, Barrafi na has made a name for itself as a top destination to enjoy authentic and delicious tapas. Barrafi na Borough Yards, located close to Borough Market, is Barrafi na’s fi rst outpost south of the river, and you can expect everything from regional classics to modern takes on authentic tapas. Take a pew at the marble bar in front of the open kitchen and tuck into an array of tantalising dishes such as chipirones (deep-fried baby squid) and chicken a la Catalana. barrafi na.co.uk

Sabor Founded by the team who formerly worked at Barrafi na, Sabor fi rst opened its doors in February 2018, clinching a Michelin star just eight months after opening. T e restaurant is tucked away just behind Regent Street, and off ers a welcome oasis for tired but tasteful shoppers. T e food here is inspired by

Andalucian tapas bars, the asadors (restaurants serving food cooked in a wood-fi red oven) of Castile and the seafood restaurants of Galicia. Standout dishes include suckling pig, as well as camarones fritos (fried shrimp) with runny egg. You can sit at the bar, or reserve your space upstairs at one of the communal tables, where you’ll be greeted with rustic decor, chalkboard menus and a gorgeous tiled kitchen. saborrestaurants.co.uk

BiBo Set within Mondrian hotel in the heart of Shoreditch, BiBo is a vibrant and buzzing restaurant and courtyard. At the helm is Andalucian chef Dani García, who was awarded three Michelin stars in Spain. BiBo off ers a range of menus to explore — including à la carte, brunch and express lunch, as well as a mouthwatering desserts and drinks menu. T e oxtail brioche, fi lled with sliced mushrooms and rocket, is a thing of beauty, as are the creamy and crunchy jamón croquetas. BiBo is also a great spot for enjoying a cocktail or a sangria, and the paella (which serves two people) makes for a delightful sharing dish. book.ennismore.com/restaurants/ bibo/shoreditch
