44 Christmas at home Design DIY

Fancy making your own Christmas wreath this year? A London fl oristry design studio shares ideas and tips on how to make a success of it. Words: Helen Warwick

30 NOVEMBER 2020 CHRISTMAS IN THE CAPITAL — AN ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE IN

When it’s one of those crisp wintry days and you don’t fancy facing the elements, why not turn your attention to crafting a festive wreath? With a bit of know-how, making one is easier than you think and it’ll instantly add a seasonal touch, whether dangling from your front door, hanging in the hallway or used as a table centrepiece. “T is year, lots of people are

making twiggy wreaths with dried ingredients like grasses and cones,” says Mairead Curtin, co-founder of fl oral design studio Rebel Rebel in Hackney. With no green foliage to dry out, they last for many years, so if you want a wreath on your door for a long time — something that’s emerging as a year-round trend — go for one of these. Her tips for a dried wreath?

“Make the base out of birch twigs and wire on the decorations. Poppy seed heads, lotus seeds, pine cones, eucalyptus pods, twisted willow or hazel and preserved leaves are great for this kind of thing. Perhaps add a little sprinkling of gold or silver asparagus fern.” If you’re hoping to craft

something more traditional, she suggests mixing up foliage to add more texture to your wreath. “T ere’s a reason holly and ivy are associated with Christmas — both are in abundance at this time of year. But there are also other great

options, such as pines, fi r and things like bay, with their rich fragrance. Larch with lichen are also really beautiful and wintery.” Gather your ingredients from

independent fl orists, New Covent Garden or collect foraged strands from your garden. You could also pluck fronds from your Christmas tree or pick up pine cones that have fallen to the ground. “You’ll need a wire base, some

sphagnum moss, reel wire or string, and then your mix of foliage with some stub wire. Attach decorations like pine cones or dried fruit. Maybe you want to add old jewellery you have lying around the house for a bit of sparkle, or toy cars, or something interesting that has special meaning to you and your loved ones.” And there you have it.
