Twentieth-century confl ict sites in Turkey, Vietnam and the Pacifi c have also been the object of pilgrimages for veterans of US and European campaigns and their descendants. Military tour fi rms such as Sausalito-based Valor Tours also report bookings from those whose interest is academic or general. Greece and Croatia are both popular with


ASTA members, and the UK is also showing an increase, especially among non-British visitors, with lots of people keen to explore ancient wonders like Hadrian’s Wall, Stonehenge and Avebury. New York-based Transcendent Travel combines tours to UK stately homes with afternoon teas and stays in country hotels. Favorites among US travelers include: the UNESCO-listed big hitter Chitzen Itza and the Mayan sites of Mexico and Central America; Peru’s Machu Picchu citadel, as well as the less-established sites at Kuelap and Choquequirao; Scotland’s castles; Europe’s art-fi lled cities, Paris, Florence, London, Rome and Madrid; Angkor Wat in Cambodia; and the Taj Mahal in India.

‘Soft adventure’ tourism has a global


audience, and has turned destinations like Costa Rica and New Zealand into market leaders. From fl y fi shing to hiking and bungee jumping, active tourism is good for the body as well as the mind. Adventure tourism covers the gamut of


active holidays, from easy walks through to more technical activities such as diving, skiing and surfi ng. Key advantages of joining a tour include someone else taking care of logistics, health and safety, the ability to access otherwise diffi cult regions — such as off -radar Peruvian mountain footpaths and Himalayan routes — and, of course, the moral support and social pleasures of small- group travel. In its 2014 survey, the UNWTO reported


that ‘69% of overall international travel departures leave from Europe, North America, and South America, and together these three regions account for over $263 billion in adventure travel expenditures.’ ▶
