through the year. Highlighting the link between the consumer experience and the current regulatory environment, ASTA combined two of our strategic events into one, forming the fi rst-ever ASTA Capitol Summit: a combination of the Premium Business Summit and Legislative Day which took place in early June. Nearly 200 attendees got an exclusive look at ASTA’s consumer research report, How

America Travels, and learned about evolving their business. On the corporate side, ASTA’s partnered with T e Company Dime to uncover ways to convert unmanaged business travel into managed travel. You’ll be able to learn more about these projects over the summer. T e educational opportunities we bring you, as well as the leading insights from top industry players, are among the benefi ts of being an ASTA member. Even if you don’t follow politics, you’ve probably noticed there are many policy

issues on the table that could impact the travel industry. T e common thread running through these issues is major involvement by the federal government in the day-to- day operations of businesses. T is infl uence is manifested through the tax system, and through regulations by the Department of Transportation and Department of Labor and others, and shows no sign of slowing, especially on issues that don’t require legislation from the gridlocked Congress. Bottom line, the government is paying increased attention to the travel and tourism industry, and that’s why ASTA is your voice in Washington, D.C. While you can’t control the outcome, you can have a say in what happens. As part of ASTA’s Capitol Summit, we hosted a record number of travel agents who went to Capitol Hill to convey fi rsthand ASTA’s stance on critical issues facing the corporate and leisure travel economy. T at’s the power of your trade association in action! We’re going to fi ght onerous legislation that’s anti-consumer or impacts our businesses negatively. T at’s why H.R. 2515, Travel Agent Retail Fairness Act, is such a critical piece of legislation — learn more on page 17. Helping you grow your business is an equally important part of our mission, so I hope

you’ll take advantage of some hands-on learning opportunities at one of our events this year. T e ASTA Global Convention in San Diego this August will be full of educational sessions designed with you in mind, and the ASTA China Summit in Guiyang in November will be a cultural immersion you won’t want to miss. Stay tuned to ASTA for event announcements and advocacy updates from our government aff airs team. Wishing you a safe and happy summer!
