Baden-Baden GERMANY
SET IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE BLACK FOREST, IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY THE CITY IS ON UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LIST OF THE GREAT SPA TOWNS OF EUROPE
Health through water The term ‘spa’ originates from the phrase ‘sanus per aquam’, which means ‘health through water’. This concept was already treasured by the Romans when they founded the settlement of Baden-Baden over 2,000 years ago, complete with the first baths. Baden-Baden’s natural springs deliver 800,000 litres of thermal water daily from deep below the ground, with the mineral-rich, warm water thought to cure all ills. Today, Baden-Baden continues to provide a
sanctuary of wellness. The city’s two thermal baths, Caracalla Spa and Friedrichsbad, are both manifestations of relaxation. The slick, glass- fronted Caracalla Spa features an expansive bathing and wellness space. All pools are filled with healing natural water directly from the springs. The unique mineralisation and the pleasantly warm water temperatures between 32C and 38C have a relaxing effect on the muscles, joints and skin. A range of other tailored treatments can also be enjoyed at Caracalla Spa’s Wellness Lounge.
106 The historic spa Friedrichsbad presents more
than 145 years of bathing history, bringing traditional Roman bathing culture and Irish hot- air bathing into the modern day. More than just bathing, the Friedrichsbad wellness ritual is based on a coordinated sequence of gradually warming the body and gently cooling it down again. When the spa opened in 1877, the more well-heeled clientele enjoyed the solitude of the private baths, allowing them to distinguish themselves from the public. Covered in beautiful majolica tiles, these private baths remain and are available for all to enjoy. “After 10 minutes you forget time, after 20 minutes, the world,” noted US author Marc Twain after his visit to Friedrichsbad.
World-class accommodation In addition to two world-renowned thermal baths, Baden-Baden is home to a selection of high-quality spa and wellness hotels. Luxury can be found at the five-star superior hotel Maison Messmer, the design
lifestyle hotel Roomers or the historic five-star superior grand hotel Brenners Park-Hotel and Spa. An urban retreat in the centre of Baden-Baden,
the iconic Maison Messmer is also home to the Royal Spa. It boasts a colourful, glass-domed indoor pool, aromatic experience showers and soothing wellness footbaths. The architecture of the sauna area was inspired by ancient Rome, as well as the mesmerising paintings of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. The trendy lifestyle hotel Roomers, designed by
Piero Lissoni, offers a spa, gym and a rooftop pool overlooking the city of Baden-Baden and the rolling hills of the Black Forest. The Roomers rooftop bar is one of the city’s best spots for a sunset drink. Part of the Brenners Park-Hotel and Spa, Villa
Stéphanie Spa and Wellbeing is a jewel amongst the private luxury spas of Baden-Baden. It’s solely dedicated to the individual spa experience, offering a holistic concept centred around medicine, emotional balance, fitness, beauty and detox (including digital detox).
Personalised wellbeing Baden-Baden’s soothing spas count international celebrities in their loyal customer base, and the city’s numerous medical clinics attract clientele from all over the world with their innovative treatments and state-of-the-art facilities. Tailormade health checks are conducted for each patient at Dr Harry König and Associates, to focus on individual needs and wants. Other services offered at the Medical Care Centre range from aesthetic beauty to dentistry, physiotherapy and more. At Max Grundig Klinik, their extensively trained medical professionals use cutting-edge technology to perform treatments, with a warm, patient-centric focus. For further relaxation, stroll through the
‘Lichtentaler Allee’, a 1.86-mile-long green oasis lined with some of the most exotic varieties of flowering plants and trees. Home to one of Germany’s largest municipal forests, Baden-Baden is also a great destination for walks or hiking tours. Merkur Mountain, the highest point of the city, offers a breathtaking view and is a great spot to
watch the sunset. A funicular railway brings you up to the peak in only few minutes. Baden-Baden is the gateway to the Black Forest Scenic Route, which leads to the Black Forest National Park and impresses visitors with thriving nature and splendid views down the Rhine Valley.
Culture and cuisine The picturesque streets of Baden-Baden are filled with exquisite boutiques selling luxury brands and unique, locally made gifts. After a day of shopping, indulge in the abundance of gastronomic options on offer, from Michelin-starred cuisine to charismatic taverns. The city’s cuisine is influenced by the nearby Alsace region and a range of global dishes are also available. The nearby Rebland is home to some superb Rieslings and local spirits. The Festival Hall, Europe’s second largest
opera house, presents a wealth of cultural events throughout the year, or spend an evening in the iconic Casino Baden-Baden. A visit one of Baden- Baden’s museums, such as the Museum Frieder Burda or the Fabergé Museum, is also a must-do.
