Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences BAA ATOLL, MALDIVES
Guests are invited to relax while watching long-tailed tropicbirds soar on thermal currents above the lush jungle surrounding Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences’ Javvu Spa. This holistic retreat will leave guests feeling completely rejuvenated
It’s rare to find a hotel spa in the Maldives hidden in the seclusion of such a large, lush jungle, but Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences isn’t a typical resort island. More than 70% of the island has been left as undeveloped jungle, save for a 1.9-mile round-island running track (one of the only ones of its kind in the Maldives) passing by the white sand beaches and pandan trees. As one of the Maldives’ larger resort islands,
more than 2,500 coconut trees provide shade and help keep it cool from the equatorial sun. A gentle sea breeze consistently blows in from the waters of the Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, keeping the air tropical temperate. With so much space, the management of this
five-star property has been able to create organic gardens and plantations, as well as a hydroponics project, a dedicated mushroom-growing hut and even a large chicken compound named Cluckingham Palace to house the egg-laying hens. This enables the resort to produce the majority of its salads, herbs and some fruit on the island
40
and develop the award-winning dining concept, Wellness Your Way. Produce is so fresh it appears on guests’ plates
often within an hour or so of being picked. Growing it on the island reduces Amilla’s carbon footprint from imports (no mean feat for a country in the middle of the Indian Ocean). The preservative-free Homemade@Amilla programme runs in sync with Homegrown@Amilla, ensuring less packaging waste is generated on the island because products like coconut oil, probiotic sodas, kombucha, kefir, jam, pickles and more are made in-house. The third cornerstone ties it all together — the country’s broadest selection of speciality menus for eating lifestyles: vegan/vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free and low carb/keto/paleo, available alongside standard menus at all seven of Amilla’s restaurants at no extra charge. Guests seeking wellness and spa experiences
can discover the real meaning of a holistic approach to wellness at the resort’s Javvu Spa. Its 360-degree approach incorporates spa treatments
with movement and mindfulness. Four wellness programmes are on offer, designed to integrate into guests’ holidays, while ensuring time to enjoy the beach and underwater world. This way they still have time to enjoy some of the highlights of the area including watching some of the world’s largest aggregations of manta rays at Hanifaru Bay (May to November, peaking in summer). Each Wellness Your Way package can be customised to suit every guest’s individual wellness goals. The programmes are supported by the
Maldives’ most extensive fitness facilities (Amilla Resort is committed to becoming the best resort in the Maldives for fitness). The amenities include Amilla’s new air-conditioned cardio and strength studios, al fresco boxing area, a large main pool, a fun outdoor jungle gmnasium, running/ cycling tracks, tennis courts finished to the same standards as the US Open facilities, a football pitch and extensive watersports. Depending on guests’ preferences, packages can also incorporate yoga, and even acrobatics training from the
island’s specialists, who perform for guests during dinner time through the week. The island’s Javvu Spa team can also weave
into the programmes special therapies including Sensora light and sound therapy and a unique Dhivehi Beys massage treatment, inspired by the healing secrets of Maldivian traditional medicine. These healing traditions have been developed over the centuries. Today, only a few Dhivehi Beys healers exist. However, Dhivehi Beys is still popular among Maldivians, and many will travel miles for treatments with the right healer. With the support of a local Dhivehi Beys
healer, the Javvu Spa team has developed two new treatments inspired by these local healing traditions, integrated with modern techniques. They utilise indigenous Maldivian spices and herbs grown in Amilla’s organic gardens such as thamburu, fonithoshi and karanfoo to help create deeply restorative and healing treatments. With the 50-minute Thamburu Beys Dhemun
treatment, thamburu leaves are made into a paste and applied to the guest’s back. This plant has
powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, which helps with muscle inflammation and pain, while the massage techniques focus on releasing muscle tension and reducing swelling. Alternatively, the Masgulha Filuva Beys
90-minute treatment utilises a homemade massage oil infused with local spices known for their anti-inflammatory and warming effects. The spa therapists use tools sourced directly from the island: a smooth bamboo cane is rolled over the skin to deepen the pressure and palm leaves are used to stroke the body for a deep calming effect. These unique treatments are often
complemented by workshops from outstanding visiting specialists, such as martial arts experts and yogis. In June and July 2022 Amilla Maldives hosted the world’s first resort-based perimenopause and menopause retreat, where women gathered together to learn, surrounded by beaches and jungle, with a soundtrack of wild tropicbirds and Asian koels calling to each other among the trees.
