Built as a private residence between 1847 and 1852, Schadau Castle opened its doors in 2019 after an extensive renovation that turned it into a world- class hotel with an excellent restaurant. The three-star superior Schloss Schadau blends
French and English gothic styles, combined with Renaissance elements and original architectural forms. It features a number of original woodworks, conveying a sense of the castle’s 165 years of history. Both inside and out, the building is characterised by a playful air of opulence and lavish furnishings that evoke a fairytale setting. The overall impression conjured up by the castle is reminiscent of Tudor gothic and Loire Valley castles. Interestingly, the castle was regarded as a ‘high-tech’ building at the time of its construction, with the floors and internal walls containing ducts that feed combustion air directly to the fireplaces and tiled stoves, eliminating annoying draughts. In November 2020, ICOMOS Suisse (International
Council on Monuments and Sites) awarded Schloss Schadau the coveted title of ‘Historical Hotel of the Year 2021’. In cooperation with heritage
departments and tourism organisations, ICOMOS Suisse commends historical hotels and restaurants that are preserved and operated according to heritage principles. This national protected monument features nine
hotel rooms, a spacious garden terrace, restaurant and banquet facilities. Schadau guests are also able to make use of the spa and wellness facilities at the neighbouring Seepark Hotel, just a three- minute walk away. The history of the building is a thread that runs through the decor and menus at the restaurant, while the historic Rougemont Hall’s frescos and leather wallpapers make it the perfect venue for weddings, important dinners and other events. The hotel is situated in Schadau Park, designed as an English garden on the shores of Lake Thun. A meditation path with audio guide is a relaxing way to explore this unique park.
