camp can shift position. It moves twice a year between its central and southern Tanzanian bases to make the most of the annual wildebeest and zebra migration, enabled by unique tents that can be folded up into bespoke boxes.
Responsible guardianship Alongside the promise of ‘Wild Luxury’, Bushtops stands for responsible guardianship, working in partnership with local tribes. In discussion with village elders, Bushtops has established protected areas, management plans and codes of conduct. Land is leased and maintained in a way that balances cattle-grazing needs with wildlife preservation. These farsighted efforts have enabled tribes
to maintain their traditions but also to expand beyond livestock-herding and to generate new and sustainable income. Wildlife has benefited from more secure grazing and breeding areas, with greater numbers of predators and prey alike. Rent paid to the community helps maintain
livelihoods, as does local employment. Extra revenue is used to fund community healthcare and education projects. In the Mara, sponsorship from guests and
Bushtops has put hundreds of local children through education. A well has been dug, providing plenty of water for the school and the surrounding village. Classrooms, dining halls and computer labs have been funded and refurbished. Across the camps, direct involvement has
helped local schools with teaching assignments such as food hygiene and preparation; supporting an environmental club (enabling local children to participate in game drives); planting trees; and initiating a mentoring programme that promotes awareness of gender equality and balance. Sustainability is equally important. Vital
local resources such as water, energy and waste are managed with the greatest of care. The pioneering original camp, Mara Bushtops, runs on 64 photovoltaic solar panels and a large bank of special batteries. On an average day, this generates enough power to run the camp for approximately
20 hours. A backup generator starts automatically when needed, to ensure seamless, continuous comfort for guests. Eight large solar panels keep water at 60C
during the day, for the main building, all twelve tents and their hot tubs. On cloudy days, a heater using recycled briquettes supplements the panels. To fight packaging waste, Bushtops buys its
supplies in bulk and transports fresh vegetables from the market in reusable boxes. Sugar, butter, jam and honey are served in small bowls and dishes rather than wasteful individual packs. All biodegradable waste is composted, whilst non- biodegradable recyclable waste is sent to Nairobi to be processed. Bushtops seeks a more harmonious future,
