Futangue Hotel & Spa LAKE RANCO, CHILE

Get ready for a journey through breathtaking natural landscapes of pristine forests, majestic mountains, beautiful lakes, turquoise waterfalls, spectacular lava fields and serene hot springs. This remote and once impenetrable land now has a network of exclusive hiking trails, enabling visitors to enjoy nature like nowhere else in Patagonia. Futangue is a boutique hotel and nature reserve,

representing one of the last remaining off-the- beaten-track locations in the Lake District. It’s become a cornerstone of private conservation in Chile and an emerging ecotourism destination, perched on the edge of beautiful Lake Ranco, the third largest in the country. The project started in 1997 with the construction

of complex networks of trails across the Patagonian Andes, opening a world where few people had ever ventured. Over 75 miles of spectacular trails have been created across a protected area of 34,000 acres of native temperate rainforest. These forests are home to unique species such as the endangered Darwin’s frog and one of the most ancient marsupials in the world, the monito del monte.

In the meadows closest to Lake Ranco, travellers

can stay in Futangue Hotel & Spa, which has only 26 rooms and is the starting point to explore the park. Its architecture highlights the region’s native wood and complements the environment, assimilating the classic barns and stables of southern Chile. The decor uses ethnic fabrics and colourful textiles inspired by local artists and objects from the Mapuche culture. The restaurant offers a culinary experience featuring the best ingredients of Northern Patagonia, such as native berries, fresh vegetables from local growers and excellent seafood from the coast. The spa is right next to the hotel, facing

mountains and waterfalls. After a long day of excursions, guests can indulge in the heated indoor pool or the semi-Olympic outdoor pool, take a sauna or revitalise with a selection of massage therapies that make use of local oils and scents. The project is committed to the conservation of

the area’s natural heritage and collaborates with environmental education, academic research and the local community. All profits go to conservation efforts and the park’s maintenance.

DON’T MISS Set off on a full-day excursion to the Sky Trail and enjoy amazing views of Lake Ranco and some of Patagonia’s largest volcanoes
