PAID CONTENT FOR WHITE CLIFFS COUNTRY
White Cliffs Country KENT, ENGLAND
Unforgettable landscapes, rich heritage and fantastic hospitality are just some of the reasons to visit Kent’s Heritage Coast in White Cliffs Country, encompassing the regions of Dover, Deal and Sandwich. And with 2023 being designated Year of the Coast by the National Coastal Tourism Academy, there’s never been a better time to visit. White Cliffs Country is steeped in history and
heritage, with the historic port town of Dover being one of England’s best-kept secrets and the perfect base from which to explore the area. Majestic Dover Castle has stood sentinel over the town for more than 2,000 years and the world’s oldest known sea-going vessel, the Bronze-Age Boat, is housed in Dover Museum. A few miles along the coast is secluded St
Margaret’s Bay. James Bond author Ian Fleming wrote Moonraker here and Noel Coward entertained Kathryn Hepburn, Spencer Tracey and other famous friends at his house on the beach. The historic landmark of South Foreland Lighthouse is where Marconi sent the first international wireless transmission in 1899.
Visitors can walk along the clifftop from the National Trust White Cliffs Visitor Centre to the lighthouse for views across the English Channel, stopping for tea and cake at Mrs Knott’s Tearoom. The seaside town of Deal boasts an award-
winning high street and an unspoiled seafront best viewed from the pier. Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England while Walmer Castle and Gardens was once home to the Duke of Wellington. Just outside Deal is 250-acre Betteshanger Park, home to a mile-long tarmac cycle track, mountain bike trails, Boonies Outdoor Adventure course, Swincars (e-spider cars for off- road driving) and Kent Mining Museum. Sandwich is one of Britain’s best-preserved
medieval towns and the Guildhall Museum is home to an original Magna Carta and a beautifully preserved courthouse. For unbeatable views across the rooftops and surrounding countryside, visitors can climb to the top of St Peter’s Tower. Nearby Richborough Roman Fort, where Roman rule began and ended in Britain, has incredible historical interpretations for visitors to experience.
