Situated at the mouth of the River Tagus where it meets the Atlantic ocean, Lisbon is a European city with a strong connection to the sea, blessed with a proliferation of sandy beaches. No visit to the capital would be complete without taking a walk along the coast or spending a few days sunbathing at the beach. Baixa House is a venerable 18th-century
building built in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1755. Today, the building acts as a unique and charming collection of apartments in the heart of the city’s Baixa district, just a few steps from the seafront, restaurants, bars, shops and marinas. After a more recent renovation and
rejuvenation, Baixa House now makes up a collection of beautiful apartments — named after Lisbon’s botanical gardens — for two to seven people. Branching off a central staircase and featuring original wooden floorboards, these 14 apartments are filled with individual character, unique objects, curiosities, design elements and vintage furniture.
White walls and large windows feature
throughout, with many of the apartments boasting long balconies for soaking up the sun while enjoying breakfast. Interest is added through the use of traditional azulejo tiles, fresh flowers, colourful rugs, floral wallpaper and vibrant accessories. One of the best parts of staying at Baixa House
is the exceptional breakfast offering. Guests arrive to a fridge stocked with cheese, jam, yoghurt, juice and muesli, along with Portuguese cakes and tea or coffee. Guests are awakened by the smell of freshly baked bread gently wafting from a cotton bag filled with still-warm rolls hanging outside their door. Owner and landscape architect Jesus Moraime
has carefully and lovingly sourced much of the decor and amenities from regional suppliers, from the crockery to the blankets and rugs. The ever-helpful reception team are based on the first floor of the building and are on hand for any questions about the apartment or to recommend and book tables at local restaurants.
