Three unusual hair techniques are on offer in Knightsbridge that fit the brief for 2020 styles. Words: Mattie Lacey-Davidson
I
raised an eyebrow the first time I heard of thermal scissors. After destroying my hair in the 1990s as part of a bid to get it
as straight as possible, as an adult I avoid getting heat near my hair as much as I can. Being told that haircuts with
heated scissors actually prevent split ends and extend longevity between cuts (an idyllic prospect for those of us trying to grow healthy long locks), seemed to go against everything I knew. So the beauty sleuth in me set out to investigate.
High and low tech I tracked the technique down at Neville Hair and Beauty in Knightsbridge, where Jack is the resident expert. As it turns out, the heated blades seal as they snip to help prevent split ends and lock in moisture. By sealing the hair cuticle, this protects strands from damage caused by pollution, sunlight and even heat styling — so you’re fighting heat damage with heat. Fancy that. While the London salon is plugged into this new high-tech option, on the
CASE STUDY
Laura Sagen, now aged 30, had a bad perm when she was just 17, which ended up costing her a third of her hair. The hair follicles were so damaged that her hair wouldn’t grow, no matter what she tried. After many at-home trials, Laura created a formula that produced visible results in just two weeks. She shared this new hair mask with her friends, who all reported the same results and she now works with a laboratory in Devon to enhance the formulation with additional, hard-to-source natural ingredients and produce larger quantities for customers. The Hair Fuel is a vegan hair mask that tackles hair growth issues at the roots. The blood vessels attached to the hair root carry nutrients and oxygen to the hair, supporting growth and health. Hair Fuel is available on subscription in three-, six- and 12-month pack- ages. For more information, visit the website at:

flip side Neville Hair and Beauty also has a colour option that goes right back to basics: palm painting. Tis is its innovative take on
balayage, one of the biggest colour trends in recent decades. It cuts application time by at least 40 minutes and allows for a more tactile approach to colouring; instead of using application tools, the stylists use their hands. Rather than breaking the hair into sections, it enables the colourist to look at head shape and the hair as a whole, working in natural light in keeping with the hair’s original pigments.
Elena Lavagni, director of Neville
Hair and Beauty, explains the reasoning behind this new aproach: “By picking out the lighter areas, we work on enhancing and lifting to deliver a soft, uncontrived effect, avoiding harsh angular foil lines. Tis innovative technique creates a free-flowing, effortless look by gradually teasing colour through the mid-lengths to the tips of the hair using the palm. Compared to finger painting, the palm is a larger surface area than your finger, so the colour is less bitty. It’s free-flowing and, ultimately, kinder on the eye.”
On trend Another unusual option at the salon is a razor cut. Done with a straight- edge blade it allows the stylist to cut hair into a choppy style, with wispy ends. With shaggy hair, even mullets, trending for 2020 styles this technique is set to soar in popularity. Combine this with palm painting,
if you have brown or blonder hair, and you’ll find yourself with the iconic hairstyle seen on Rachel in Friends (played by Jennifer Anniston), a look set to make a huge comeback this year as 1990s trends sweep fashion, beauty and hair on and off catwalks.
