Harnessing the power of your cells Cells are packed with proteins that help the body to regenerate and heal. Harvesting these cells, and processing them in a clinical setting, allows the surgeon to harness this power for the benefit of the patient. One example is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments for hair loss, which help with wound healing and rejuvenating the face. Similarly, harvesting fat, processing it in specialised machines that extract stem cells, then injecting it into the scalp or scars, has shown dramatic improvements in single-treatment hair loss and scar reduction. Implant advancements with minimal-access surgery Te use of implants to enhance appearance dates back to 2000 BC. Luckily, however, implant tech- nology has come a long way since then. Prominent ear correction is one of the most desired plastic procedures, yet the downtime after surgery has previously prevented some patients from seeking the treat- ment. Today, small gold-plated metal alloy implants allow surgeons to perform this procedure via an 8mm incision. Dissolving sutures can then be used to ensure there’s no need for bulky bandages. Similarly, for breast augmentation, it’s now possible to insert implants though incisions as small as 2cm.

Mr Ali Souéid MB BCh LRCPI LRCSI BAO (NUI) is a consultant in burns and plastic surgery. In the NHS, he specialises in the treatment of burns and paediatric trauma reconstructive surgery. Mr Souéid is also an accomplished aesthetic surgeon and is one of the few pioneering surgeons in plastic surgery to practise robotic surgery in hair transplantation. He’s particularly keen on evidence-based practices and the use of effective new technologies to advance patient care. In his field, he has more than 30 publications and has presented his work in more than 40 national and international presentations.
