Christmas in Central Bohemia: advent at castles, nativity displays, and traditions

41

Festive markets on historic squares, fairy-tale castles and chateaux dec- orated for the season and traditional nativity scenes — Central Bohemia in the Czech Republic off ers all this and more. Here you can enjoy the magic of advent just outside Prague, without the tourist crowds but with plenty of authentic charm.

ADVENT WITHOUT THE CROWDS Unlike bustling Prague, Central Bohe- mia off ers a calmer and more genuine holiday atmosphere. Towns such as Beroun, Kutna Hora and Melnik host enchanting Christmas markets each year, with beautifully decorated his- toric squares where traditions can be savoured in a more intimate setting.

CHRISTMAS AT CASTLES AND CHATEAUX At Loucen Castle, 20 Christmas trees will brighten the chambers during the advent season, showcased through special guided tours. Krivoklat Castle invites visitors to its Christmas mar- ket, which can even be reached by a historic train from Prague. Konopiste Chateau will once again shine in fes- tive decor — just as it did back in the days of Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este. For those seeking relaxation, Cha-

teau Mcely off ers an escape from the pre-holiday rush. Guests can enjoy the Christmas spirit with tastings of tra- ditional sweets and seasonal music. When snow blankets the landscape, horse-drawn sleigh rides reveal the beauty of the surrounding country- side, while luxurious wellness servic- es add a touch of indulgence.

TRADITIONAL NATIVITY SCENES No Czech Christmas is complete without nativity scenes. In Decem- ber, Kacina Chateau presents an ex-

hibition of varied creches. T e largest puppet nativity in the country — the Karlštejn Royal Nativity — is on dis- play beneath Karlstejn Castle, home to a year-round Nativity Museum. T e Skoda Museum in Mlada Boleslav

also features a permanent display, the Czech Nativity — a series of bronze sculptures depicting key moments in national history, originally created for the Skoda car company by renowned Czech artist David Cerny. At the Mining Museum in Pribram,

visitors can explore both historic and modern nativity scenes from the mining region. Open-air museums, dedicated to folk architecture, are also favourite advent destinations. At Vysoky Chlumec, Kourim and Prerov nad Labem, cottages will be decorat- ed in period style, off ering glimpses of Christmas as our great-grandmothers once knew it, alongside programmes rich in tradition.
