BMC SPOTLIGHT: V OLUNTEERS
Dorian Thomas
C
How did you first get involved with your local BMC area? I became involved through a conversation with a colleague who informed me that they were looking for an Area Chair for South Wales and that I should put my name forward!
What made you put yourself forward for your role? It didn’t take me long for me to make the decision to get involved and give something back to an organisation which I have supported, and been a member of, for a number of years.
BMC AREAS: Get involved
urrently, I am an outdoor instructor and guide. But in a previous life I was Head of Operations for an International Defence Company!
In my volunteer role for the BMC I am the South Wales Area
Chair, and as such my main duties are to chair the South Wales Area meetings, making sure that current issues within the area and in the BMC are given time to be fairly discussed and accurately reported back to the BMC. It may sound very daunting, but there is a great team of volunteers and BMC office staff who support you in delivering this role. The South Wales Area Chair is also part of the BMC Cymru Committee where we discuss and champion Welsh specific issues.
What has been your most rewarding experience whilst volunteering? Just being involved and making sure that members concerns are being addressed.
Why are you stepping down? I have been the area chair for three years and I feel it is time for a change. I will not be stepping away from volunteering for the BMC as I will be putting myself forward for one of the vacant Member Council roles for South Wales.
We have a number of vacant roles in our local areas, with a number of volunteers reaching the end of their terms at the next round of meetings in October. BMC Areas meet four times a year to discuss
a number of regional and national issues, as well as being a social gathering with speakers and quizzes. The role of the volunteers is to organise the meetings, and to feedback to Members’ Council.
If you’re keen to get stuck in please visit the BMC website to see the current and upcoming roles in your area, and to read role descriptions.
