IN GEAR LEATHERMAN

MOTHER AND SON ADVENTURES

FREE T2 PENKNIFE | £48.99

Another piece of kit that has lasted most of my adventure career. I think I've had it for about 20 years and I wouldn't go on an adventure without it. It simply has countless uses. leatherman.com

SIGG TRAVELLER WATER BOTTLE | £18.99

My Sigg bottle has been with me for 30 years! It’s battered and bruised, and I'm so attached to it I sometimes don't take it out because I don't want to lose it. I love kit that is made to last both because I hate wastefulness but also because I know it works and my battered red bottle holds so many memories. sigg.com

OSPREY TEMPEST 40 DAYPACK | £175.00 ARMADILLO MERINO WOOL BASE LAYERS | £190.00

When you're on an expedition for weeks or months you start to pong. I’ve found that Merino wool base layers are the best at reducing the smell. I love my Armadilo ones because they are so soft and they actually look good, which doesn’t matter so much on big expeditions but helps when you're just out and about on daytrips with the kids in the UK. armadillomerino.com

I use this every time I go 'outside' now. It’s tough and lightweight, and I expect I'll be using it for decades to come. My son has his Talon Jnr osprey daysack too, he loves it because it matches mine but also because of all the gear loops/pockets etc. I don't go on many adventures without him now so his kit is my kit.

PARAMO ALTA III JACKET | £330.00

I don't like getting lots of kit, the great outdoors doesn't need us to keep buying stuff. However, in the UK, you really do need a decent waterproof jacket. I like my Paramo jacket because it’s a bit longer than most jackets, which keeps my legs drier if I don't want the hassle of waterproof trousers. And I love that it’s got all the pockets in all the right places paramo-clothing.com

OS EXPLORER MAPS | £9.99 I've got the OS Maps App but I'm old school, I like a real map too – the batteries don't run out and they don't lose signal. Also, they are such wonderful things to keep, frame, and treasure. At home, we have loads of maps all over our walls from all over the world. ordnancesurvey.co.uk

FLASH COOKING SYSTEM | £139.99

I've had the same stove for 12 years; it is indestructible. It’s been soaked in salt water, at sea, for weeks on end and it’s been bashed about at the bottom of my pack, but it still works. It may not boil one litre of water in a minute anymore (I think that is their USP) because it really has taken a battering, but if you're not in a hurry (I rarely 'have' to boil a litre in a minute anyway) it’s great. I'm just very impressed that it’s still going strong. jetboil.co.uk
