HUMAN CONDITION WHERE: CRADLE OF HUMANKIND, GAUTENG

Truly remarkable: Fascinated by our origins? This region is home to the world’s richest hominid site and has yielded about 40% of the world’s human ancestor fossils. Besides off ering an insightful history lesson, the cradle also off ers a cultural treat. The Nirox Sculpture Park is dedicated to art, music and, of course, sculpture and there are studios to visit, workshops to join and a world-class al fresco concert venue. Visit: www.thecradleof umankind.net

HIGH SOCIETY WHERE: MAPUNGUBWE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE, LIMPOPO Truly remarkable: Neighbouring both Zimbabwe and Botswana, this beautiful piece of country (like the Corolla) has important stories to tell. Mapungubwe was the largest kingdom in the sub-continent before it was abandoned in the 14th century. You can still see the almost untouched remnants of the palace sites, as well as the settlement area. They off er a visual understanding of the rise of socio- political structures over some 400 years in this part of the country. And like, the other destinations on our must-see list, Mapungubwe is a World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the Confl uence Walkway (even if only for Instagram-worthy posts), a surfaced pathway providing easy access to several look-out platforms with spectacular views of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers. NATURAL WONDER WHERE: ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK, KWAZULU-NATAL

Truly remarkable: Containing SA’s last remaining swamp forests, this 332 000ha park links up eight eco- systems and, with its three major lakes, is Africa’s largest estuarine system. It’s a coast-lover’s paradise (think 220km of beaches that extend to Kosi Bay on the Mozambican border), as well as the perfect park for game-viewing. If you’re looking for a rare experience, book a turtle tour between November and March. The region is the only surviving major nesting site for loggerhead and leatherback turtles. Once they’ve hatched on the beach at night, baby turtles make their way to the water – a perilous journey, with a myriad of predators waiting to nab them, including birds and ghost crabs. Only once they’ve reached the waves safely do their mothers return from the ocean to the spots where the eggs hatches. How they remember these remains a mystery. Visit: https://isimangaliso.com
