SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? LET’S EXPLORE!

METEOR MEETS EARTH WHERE: VREDEFORT DOME, FREE STATE

Truly remarkable: Want to see the biggest meteorite impact geologists have ever found on earth? Head to the Free State’s Vredefort Dome; it’s nearly twice as big as the impact that killed the planet’s dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It’s also the oldest impact crater ever found on earth. A World Heritage Site, Vredefort is best seen on a guided tour. Choose from a geological one, or a cultural and historical one, and get to grips with the space. By the way, this crater is about 300km in diameter, so thankfully our steed has excellent fuel economy at 6,6l/100km – hardly a challenge! Visit: www.vredefortdome.org

MADIBA’S STORY WHERE: ROBBEN ISLAND, WESTERN CAPE Truly remarkable: This landmark’s powerful political history is the island’s calling card and an essential element in our nation’s multi-layered narrative. Apart from housing first a leper colony and then the notorious prison where former President Nelson Mandela, as well as a host of other black anti-apartheid activists, were jailed for decades under brutal conditions, it’s a World Heritage Site with a complex and sensitive eco-system. The island’s protected under South African law as a nature conservation site. If you’re a bird-watcher, there’s a chance of seeing 132 different species (including endangered ones) which are indigenous to this region. Visit: www.robben-island.org.za

THE CRADLE OF MANKIND IS HOME TO THE WORLD’S RICHEST HOMINID SITE AND HAS YIELDED ABOUT 40% OF THE WORLD’S HUMAN ANCESTOR FOSSILS.

ART AND SOUL WHERE: UKHAHLAMBA- DRAKENSBERG PARK, KWAZULU-NATAL

Truly remarkable: Another World Heritage Site with bragging rights is uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park in KwaZulu-Natal, thanks to its legacy of rock art and endemic flora. And there’s a great deal of it; a significant concentration of San rock art can be seen in hundreds of caves and rock-shelters, making the collection the largest one south of the Sahara. The park’s also beautiful to behold: think a diverse range of habitats protecting high levels of rare and endangered animals and plants.
