LIVE THE LIFE 42

AN

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

B

uilt on a decommissioned power station, Turbine Hotel & Spa on Knysna’s Thesen Island retains much of the old machinery of the turbine hall as an integral part of its decor. Exposed brass and metal pipes, instrument knobs on door handles and

even adjustable metal pipe clamps used as napkin rings in the 90-seater Island Café restaurant give the boutique hotel a funky vibe and a good dose of character. But the exposed pipes and gauges are about as

industrial as it gets at this plush five-star hotel. The well-appointed rooms have flat-screen TVs, high- speed wifi, an espresso pod machine, an iPod docking station and a DVD player, with a DVD library at the reception. The network of corridors reveals vast collections

of South African paintings and sculptures, making for a living museum, while the unusual instruments and contraptions dotted around the hotel will keep engineers, scientists and curious visitors fascinated. Enjoy al fresco dining at the Island Café, which

overlooks the Thesen Island canals, or pop into the Gastro Pub for gourmet pub grub and craft beer with a view of the marina. The hotel also has an adjoining Col’Cacchio pizzeria on the water’s edge.
