OSG Labs Fosters Innovation This internal group looks forward
While the idea for OSG Labs had been kicking around for a while, its official existence didn’t begin until seven months ago.
“It’s really exciting,” says John Nuclo, executive vice president of OSG Labs. “We were able to take some key folks out of direct business management to work more diligently to work toward the future we’re driving toward, as opposed to burdening the entire organization.”
Nuclo came to OSG more than a dozen years ago as part of the leadership team of a performance- marketing firm OSG had acquired. Like many at the firm, he knows OSG’s task to shift from a print provider to a SaaS offering is a challenging transformation. Those challenges and solutions sit at the intersection of MarTech and FinTech – both of which are competitive spaces. OSG Labs allows a company the size of OSG to transform while still operating and thriving in its legacy operations. The Labs organization also relies on the company’s heritage in performance marketing, data, customer communications, and digital payments to move forward. “Transformational boldness is required of the organization,” he says. That’s why Nuclo, chief product officer Steve Karp, and OSG chief commercial officer Ken Powell developed the idea of an internal innovation lab. The 40-person OSG Labs works to brainstorm products and services that will solve clients’ needs now…

and in the future.
“Lots of companies want to transform, or talk [about] transforming; but, through the OSG Labs structure, we have created a path forward into transformation,” Nuclo says. “This is a more formalized structure for innovation.”
OSG customers have been asking for help solving their bigger- picture problems, Nuclo explains. It’s essential that OSG can deliver statements – of course, companies
don’t get paid without those. But clients also want help with elevated business outcomes, such as cash cycling and cash utilization, and that’s something OSG Labs can do. While Nuclo acknowledges that some larger tech companies are looking at innovation decades in the future, those folks are looking at theoretical concepts. At OSG, the focus is on the near term: What will clients want two to three years from now? The idea is to understand, forecast, and prepare
