BY STEVE STAEDLER
IN ONLY TWO MONTHS, THE EYES OF THE AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE WORLD WILL ONCE AGAIN GAZE UPON KEN MACTIERNAN.
Surrounding him on the competition floor at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas will be more than 90 teams from around the world ready to grab aviation tools supplied by Snap-on to prove that they are the best of the best maintenance techs in the industry. Many have spent the past several months preparing for this very moment. Hours of practicing their skills, working together as a team and searching for ways to trim precious seconds from their events has all come down to this. The only thing they’re waiting for is MacTiernan’s famous seven words to kick off the 2020 Aerospace Maintenance Competition Presented by Snap-on… “Engineers, technicians and students, ready…set…start!”
GLOBAL COMPETITION If you’ve never been to the AMC before, it’s a spectacle to see. The event is open to people attending the MRO Americas show, which this year is in April 28-30 in Dallas.

DOMmagazine.com | feb 2020 The AMC provides a venue for
professional mechanics to come together and test their skills against each other, while also developing a strong sense of camaraderie over two days of friendly competition. In addition to the pros, the AMC’s School Category attracts teams from the country’s top A&P schools, giving those aspiring students a chance to see how they measure up against the industry’s best. This year, the diverse lineup of teams in Dallas will show off their knowledge, skill and integrity by competing in 30 events. Teams compete to see who’s best in six divisions: Commercial Aviation, General Aviation, Space, School, Military and MRO/OEM. Each event has a 15-minute time limit; the action is exciting, fast-paced and great drama for fans to watch. The AMC is the vision brought to
life seven years ago by MacTiernan, a San-Diego-based aircraft maintenance technician with American Airlines for more than 30 years, and The
Honorable John Goglia, a former National Transportation Safety Board member. Their goal was to create an event for aircraft technicians, regardless of the uniform they wear, to come together and demonstrate their craft to the public. “The AMC is a world stage for our
entire industry to be highlighted,” MacTiernan says. “Technicians are always behind the scenes. At times it seems like passengers don’t realize how their airplanes are fixed because they don’t see the men and women who are responsible for that. The AMC puts those technicians on a stage with a spotlight to be recognized.”
NEW EVENTS A myriad of challenges awaits the teams in Dallas. These events, which test individual skill and teamwork, are designed to mimic some of the real-world taskings aircraft technicians face on the job.
“It has been our goal to keep
the AMC fresh, and we do that by replacing a few events every year;
