PLANE TALK
By the late 1970s, when the Bristols were nearing the end of their operating life, spare parts were hard to obtain, and it became necessary to fabricate many items locally.
were fi tted with an oil dilution system, which in winter was operated for several minutes before shutting down to thin the engine oil with Avgas. After starting up, it was then necessary to run the engine for some time until the gasoline evaporated, before attempting high power for take-off .
Guenther Moellenbeck, my fi rst
foreman at Wardair provided me with the following information and stories. “Max bought four Bristols from the

air force. They were the last four aircraft and were accompanied by a lot of spares and I believe there were around six spare engines. Oil dilution was a very important operation in the winter time otherwise it would be a job to get the engines to turn over. You had to keep the oil temperature low otherwise the gas would evaporate. When you diluted the oil, you had to exercise the propeller several times to get the diluted oil to the prop system. This will give you a

sense of operating the engines in cold weather. There was a bypass valve in the nacelle so that if the oil got too thick it would bypass it straight to the tanks and not through the coolers. If this happened in fl ight the only alternative was to land somewhere and thaw the coolers. If you only partially heat the engine and the nacelle there was a danger that a lump of undiluted oil would block an oil pipe and starve the engine of oil. Oil pressure would drop, and
