Take your best shot

Globes photographer Steve Dunlop explains how he captures the key moments – and recalls his own Globe win

How do you prepare for the Globes each year? It tends to be the first shoot of the year for me. To get physically back together after the indulgences of Christmas, I start thinking about the Globes a couple of weeks beforehand and, believe it or not, start training! I’m normally knocking out around 13,000 steps a day, but on Globes night there’ll be another 12,000 steps on top of that.

What makes a great Globes photo? As the winners are coming towards the stage, if everybody’s happy and ecstatic, they make great shots. In fact, I always think those are the best ones, before they line up for official photos. Once I’ve done the standing shots, I try to get the winners holding the trophy high, because they make lovely pictures too.

Where will Globes guests find you on the night? At the reception, I’ll be wandering around taking photos, and I try to aim for a mix of people – VIPs and frontline travel agents. Once the awards ceremony starts, I’m constantly looking around, seeing who’s chatting with who, and going out to get those candid shots.

What do you do once the ceremony is over? As soon as the Special Awards finish, I send those images straight away to the Travel Weekly editorial team. When the ceremony is completely over, I first

file all the shots of the other winners, usually around 3.30am. The following day, everything else is sent – the cocktail party shots, people running up to the stage and people celebrating.

How did it feel to win the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Globes in 2019? I’ve been taking pictures in the travel industry since 1987. It felt like an award for all those years and the amount of trust the industry places in me.

Describe the moment you won. When I listen to the speeches, I always try to work out who’s going to win – and I normally can. But I wasn’t listening that time, as I was having trouble getting the settings on my camera right because there was so much smoke on stage.

I suddenly heard a line about somebody who’d met a lot of

royals. I thought: “Well, what’s so good about that? So have I!” Then, it slowly

dawned on me. It was completely surreal – I was

in shock. I couldn’t speak for ages afterwards. I had about 20 minutes for a glass of champagne at the top table, and then it was back to work.

What are your favourite moments on the night? Some people are instinctively overwhelmed by winning something. I just love when they’re dancing through the crowds or they’re up on stage going mad. I enjoy seeing people being recognised for what they’ve done.
