The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Cruise: ‘Don’t devalue it’

Story: Agents have commission ‘cut’ by Viking Cruises

Cruising is an excellent product, it does not need to devalue itself with discount gimmicks like we have seen in the past. The cruise companies instead offer extra value, free internet, drinks packages and so on. If the big online cruise operators battle each other in a race to the bottom, they are doing the product a disservice. So it is no wonder some cruise companies are alarmed, and some might take drastic action – and frankly, who can blame them? Patrick Doyle

Older people: Penalised

Story: Older travellers ‘penalised by extra fees and charges’ The biggest issue for older people is that when they reach a milestone birthday – 70, 75 or 80 – their insurance premiums can increase overnight. No matter that their health condition is exactly the same as it was the day before – at one minute past midnight, up goes the cost. And if they have any pre-existing health condition, even if it’s in the past, or is being managed, it’s another reason to increase the cost. And try finding an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy for over-80s. Our advice is always to shop around, as there are wide variations from one company to another. Debbie Marshall

donnabidwell_travelc @donnabidwell_travelcounsellor Well I did it! Stepped out of my comfort zone and presented to 20 travel and tourism students after I was invited to speak about what I do and my journey.
