Welcome

Welcome to the second edition of our annual Guide to Homeworking, a chance to take stock of one of the fastest-growing areas of the industry and offer insight into the realities – both good and bad – of day-to-day life as a homeworking agent.

When we first introduced this guide last

year, it was at a time when the industry was in turmoil following months without any income, the impending end of the furlough scheme and ongoing uncertainty over travel corridors and tiered restrictions. That rollercoaster ride continued much

longer than any of us could have predicted but, 12 months on, it finally feels like there’s a lot more to be positive about – and more opportunities on offer for agents keen to look to the future. With travel back on an upward trajectory, many homeworking agencies are on the hunt for new recruits and are reporting record interest from experienced agents. Some may be searching for a new role following redundancy from a shop or office-based position, while others are looking for more flexible hours and better

work-life balance and see homeworking as the answer. Whatever the reason for their change in

direction, there’s no doubt homeworking agents are making up more of the industry than ever before, and that growth shows no signs of slowing down. We find out just how much the sector has

expanded over the past 18 months (page 44), and offer a no-nonsense guide to your first year as a homeworker (page 46). For more established agents, we also canvass the industry for advice on how to grow your business once you’ve passed that initial set-up phase (page 52), and how to develop a specialism that will attract customers in search of in-depth expertise (page 56). If you’re contemplating a move or simply

want to find out more about how each agency works, take a look at the company profiles (starting on page 59). They showcase the variety of models on offer to prospective homeworkers to help you find the one that best suits your ambitions and can help you build the foundations for a bright future ahead.
