Johannesburg: city of gold
South Africa might be the Rainbow Nation, but it’s only in Johannesburg that the country’s full kaleidoscope of colour really shines. Whether it’s the hipster districts of Braamfontein or Maboneng, buzzing markets where high-end fashion and homemade craſts sit side-by-side, or the street art-adorned Orlando Towers that dominate the skyline of nearby Soweto, make sure clients flying in via Joburg spend a few days soaking up the city’s electric atmosphere before they set off to explore the rest of the region. If safety worries spring to mind,
it’s time for an update – Joburg is oſten hailed as the embodiment of urban regeneration, with a creative, contemporary vibe that has transformed the city while still retaining its authentic, African character. Any sightseeing tour should start by
exploring Joburg’s historic sites, from Constitution Hill – once the site of the Old Fort prison complex where Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were held – to the Apartheid Museum, where visitors are assigned a ticket, white or non-white, on entry, to witness the
country’s troubled history first hand. Aſter that, it’s time to see what
modern-day Joburg is all about, and where better than by stopping to people-watch at one of its funky cafes? Head to the likes of Melville, Braamfontein or Parktown for the best coffee in town, and some creative culinary efforts showcasing the best of South African ingredients. But no visit would be complete
without a trip to Soweto, the township where Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu once lived, best explored on a guided bike or tuk-tuk tour to learn about its poignant history as the site of the Soweto Uprising. A couple of days is never enough
to explore a city as diverse as Johannesburg, but this is also an ideal jumping-off point to see some of South Africa’s other highlights. Set clients on their journey from here to the world- famous Kruger National Park, the largest wildlife reserve in the country, or to see the scenic beauty of the Panorama Route, which takes in natural wonders such as the Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window.
