Heathrow growth will hurt regions


Story: Labour ‘to drop support’ for third runway at Heathrow The impact of the third runway on regional airports will be overwhelmingly negative, with over 20,000 fewer international flights by 2030 from Manchester alone, according to the government’s own projections. Approximately 40% of the extra business at Heathrow would otherwise have gone through regional airports – that amounts to something like 17 million extra passenger movements at Heathrow. The impact on surface transport, congestion and air quality in the Heathrow area will be horrendous. Spending the money outside London would generate far more economic activity per pound spent and would help to rebalance the national economy and improve air quality and the overall quality of life in London.
