Cook’s 21-store closure plan is long overdue
Story: Thomas Cook puts 320 staff under consultation My honest view is that this is long overdue. There are a great number of high streets up and down the country that just do not function as high streets any more. The shops surrounding these Thomas Cook stores will either have closed or been converted in to fast-food outlets. The trend will only continue, and with Cook having a huge legacy estate due to acquisition, they probably had double the number of agencies in the wrong place, on the wrong high streets, serving the wrong demographics.

TWEETS THIS WEEK
Mark Duguid @markduguid (Carrier) A rare PDA from me, but 20 years is a pretty long time! Are any other holiday-rep romances still going?
Lindsay Garvey-Jones @LGJHX (Holiday Extras) Enormous congratulations @TTNG_Lisa as she is promoted and becomes COO of @TheTNG and @TTNG_Vim becomes CCO #TTNGConf19
Murray Harrold @hurrymurray Helpful guy @British_Airways trade support. Sorted passengers who would have got stranded as flights meant missed connections.
QUOTE OF THE
WEEK
“There are bumps in the road and [Brexit] is a big one, but the overall view has got to be positive because
people still want to travel.”

LETTER OF THE

TALK BACK WHAT YOU’RE SAYING THIS WEEK
Story: InteleTravel granted Abta membership What a joke. This makes a complete mockery of our industry. Various companies already have a strong network of homeworkers who have years of experience, yet Abta gives a licence so Tracey from Hull can start selling holidays alongside her tea slimming and body wrap business. It’s a sad day for what is already an incredibly difficult industry to work in – a slap in the face for legitimate, qualified and experienced homeworkers. ANNA HOWARD
Old-style agents seem scared of new rivals
It seems to me that a lot of “old-style” agents are more concerned about the new generation of travel consultants who know how to use social media for leads. I think it is fantastic that InteleTravel UK has been granted Abta membership, while creating thousands of jobs in this country.
KAY BEEZ ‘This could prove a disaster for Abta’
This could be a disaster for Abta. At one time, it was the recognised symbol of trust in travel. Now it seems we can all be agents – just pay the fees, pay for them to print your business cards with the Abta logo on them, and away you go.
ALAN BOWEN
I’m sorry but I find it hard to believe that it’s OK that Maureen from down the road is now calling herself a travel agent because she could do with a new hobby. Let’s see what happens when someone she has booked comes to see the real travel professionals to sort out a mess she has made of their holidays.
