The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Thomas Cook: Potential buyers will be taking a risk
Story: Can Lufthansa afford Thomas Cook bid? As the airline is one of Cook’s prized assets, and its sale the quickest way of raising cash, I assume most of Cook’s aircraft are their own and not leased. But with capacity far outstripping demand at the moment, it’s going to be a big risk for any potential buyer, and it will need to be done on some kind of agreement to fulfil flights on the tour operating side of Cook’s business. Story: Governments ‘not trusted’ over green aviation taxes People are right not to trust governments when it comes to aviation tax. Look at the UK’s record. It brought in APD in 1994 as a green tax, a modest £5 for short-haul and £10 for long-haul; today, APD is the highest in the world. Is that tax ring-fenced for environmental projects? Cabin crew: Tui recruit gave excellent service
Story: Tui Airways appoints 62-year-old as cabin crew member Mair Jones: He was on my Tui flight from Egypt. He’s lovely. I had a nice chat with him and my two little boys adored him after he let them sit in the pilot’s seat. When he asked ‘Do you want to be a pilot?’, they said ‘No, we want to be like you.’ Excellent customer service. Well done.
