Story: Corfu rubbish problem ‘resolved’ (July 2) From Ipsos to Kalamaki there are mountains of rubbish. This will stop tourists coming again. My mother lives on the island and even she doesn’t know what’s happening. SARAH Travel Weekly invites the tourist board to respond

Agents help in bad times and good
It’s funny the things we take for granted until they go wrong. Working in the industry, I knew the value of travelling with a supplier that could put a trip together properly, and booked my holiday accordingly. So, when news emerged mid-holiday that our next accommodation was in danger of being burnt to a cinder due to forest fires in Yosemite (pictured), I was able to make a call over breakfast, discuss alternative locations, and everything was instantly back on track. But it wasn’t until I was waiting to check in to the new accommodation that it
dawned on me. Behind me were two English families looking tired and stressed. They didn’t have a room booked and I could see the desperate look in their eyes as they offered to take “anything you’ve got”. That’s when the penny dropped: we use agents and travel firms because they help in the bad times, not just the good. So thank you, Karina (and the Trailfinders team), not only for a great holiday but also for reminding me of the true value of a travel agent. PETER JOYNER managing director, Thissaway
On the Beach’s Classic buy raises questions
Story: On the Beach acquires Classic Collection Two excellent companies, and some key questions. Will clients still be willing to pay that bit extra to be carefully looked after by Classic Collection once they notice it is owned by a large OTA? Can Classic maintain its excellent ‘brand name’? And will On the Beach be looking to push through far more different types of product through Classic? Time will tell.
NICK COOPER Birdfair shows Trading Standards’ lack of funds
Story: Birdfair operators ‘putting public at risk’, says Aito The real issue is a lack of funding by local authorities for Trading Standards departments. The situation is critical. Local councils have to decide whether to fund investigations into financial protection by businesses that may be based overseas or pay for social care for the elderly and education for the young. Consumer protection is simply no longer a government priority.
