Royal’s Spectrum plan is another snub for UK

Story: Royal Caribbean will not base Spectrum of the Seas in UK This news is very depressing to me. After years of bringing brand-new ships to Southampton, this is the second snub by Royal under Michael Bayley’s watch.

Story: Tunisia recovery ‘to be fuelled by low prices’ Let us hope all will go well with Tunisia back on the tourist map. I am sure the Tunisian and British governments are working hard behind the scenes in regard to security. Tunisia is a wonderful country with a lot of history and some great beaches. We wish Thomas Cook and other operators well.

Jet2 should now look to diversify

Story: Jet2holidays expansion ‘reminiscent of Airtours in 1990s’ It ended badly for Airtours [subsequently rebranded MyTravel]. The only similarity is both companies had and have powerful leadership: David Crossland at Airtours and Philip Meeson at Jet2. It’s when guys like these lose focus, believe in their own rhetoric and overstretch the business that things go wrong. Higher oil prices, interest rates and Brexit should be encouraging Jet2 to look at

diversfying into other markets outside of the UK if it is to have a future sustainable business model. If it does not, it will end up like Monarch for sure. Jet2 is now on everyone’s radar and is about to see easyJet and Ryanair appear in its marketplace and squeeze it very hard indeed. PETER SANITY

Jet2 is a great company that puts customers first. It also gives independent travel agents like us great service, which is why it is one of our preferred suppliers. Well done, Jet2 – you can only go from strength to strength. KATRINA ATKINSON

Good luck to Cook with its return to Tunisia

Norwegian growth means reduced seat pitch

Story: Norwegian to expand long-haul but could reduce short-haul Reducing seat pitch in premium to add more seats doesn’t feel like an upgrade – it feels more like an admission that a premium cabin is mandatory to make money on transatlantic routes.

THOMAS GASTON Travel Weekly would welcome a response from Norwegian
