Luton: Hot and bothered

Story: Luton airport suspends flights due to heatwave Lucy Clark: Imagine if every hot country did this. What a country we are. Absolutely ridiculous. Chris Sadler: How come runways in Egypt, Greece and Spain don’t melt?

The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Disruption: Put the record straight

Story: Airport disruption expected to continue through summer The media would have you believe that every flight is delayed or cancelled, and no one should contemplate travel. The industry is failing to get across the fact that about 96% of flights are operating. But the stories just keep coming. Peel Airports has announced plans to close Doncaster/Sheffield airport, just a month after Wizz decided to ship out and leave customers in the lurch – despite Tui having four aircraft based there. If Doncaster/ Sheffield can’t survive, what hope is there for Southend, which doesn’t have an aircraft based there, nor a single flight during the winter? The only good news is that Grant Shapps won’t be the next prime minister – although he may still be transport minister. Alan Bowen

The Cruise Room (UK) @cruiseroomUK Even Her Majesty

wanted a hold! We’ve just had the @RoyalFamily seal of approval! Her Majesty seemed thrilled and wanted to hold our @travelweekly #TWAAAs award… A nice distraction from train cancellations! @AvantiWestCoast doing its best!

Reuben’s Retreat @ReubensRetreat We met some of our wonderful supporters last night [at the AAAs] including @juliet_dennis and @lornawillised. #TWAAAs

Abuse: Don’t blame staff

Story: Scottish travellers told to stop abusing airport staff Greig Ewins: As frustrating as the situation is (we had a three-hour wait for our luggage on Sunday), there is no need to abuse the hard-working ground staff. The bosses should take more responsibility.
