NEWS ROUND-UP IN THE PICTURE: Caribbean ball

Leeds-based travel agent Worldwide Travel Solutions has raised more than £5,000 for the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Fund after hosting a charity ball supported by customers, tourist boards, airlines and tour operators. Proprietor Sharon May drew on her contacts to

organise the event to raise funds for the Caribbean islands devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. She said: “We specialise in holidays and flights to the Caribbean and many of my customers have been affected, with their relatives and family members unable to return to a normal way of life as they are still without clean water or electricity.” May (left) is pictured with Mandy Davis of travel marketing company 3For.

A leading cruise agent has called on the industry to negotiate cheaper rail fares for passengers to ease “horrendous” traffic congestion around the ports of Southampton and Dover.

Phil Nuttall, managing director of The Travel Village, believes there is an opportunity to promote “greener” modes of transport to and from UK ports.

Nuttall said passengers often

board and disembark ships during off-peak hours, which could encourage train companies to consider reducing fares for cruise customers. Nuttall said: “We have got a

problem with the roads into Southampton – it’s horrendous. “Why don’t we use the trains to

get into Southampton? Cruising is going to keep growing, so we have to make sure we have a plan B to get people into ports. Every port has rail access and we need to find out how we make use of that.”

New CroisiEurope UK sales boss pledges more trade activity

CroisiEurope’s new UK sales chief has pledged to work with “as many agents as possible” to bolster its market share. John Fair was appointed to the newly created role of UK sales director in March, having previously worked at Cosmos and 1st4cruising. The UK provides 5.5% of

Southampton hosted a record two million cruise passengers in 2017. Rebekah Keeler, commercial manager for Associated British Ports at Southampton, said cheaper fares would be a “positive step”. “This is a busy port for all sorts of commodities,” she said. “We are fortunate that the eastern dock has a rail platform and we have had some one-off services from there.

“We would like to start using the QE2 cruise terminal in the eastern dock again and are trying to facilitate a regular service into London and back. Cheaper off-peak rail fares would be a positive step and would encourage passengers to travel by train.” Andy Harmer, director of Clia UK

& Ireland, said the cruise industry body was striving to make the industry as “green and sustainable as possible”. “Overall, the major cruise ports

are well served by public transport, and passengers have a wide range of options when planning their pre and post-cruise travels,” he said.

the French river cruise line’s customers, carrying more than 12,000 Britons a year. The line owns 45 ships and charters five. “Although CroisiEurope has been in the industry a long time we have not been part of the wider community,” Fair said. “The company is hugely committed to this and growing the UK market.” The line is planning webinars,

trade incentives, special trade rates and Clia training modules. “The opportunity to get agents

selling CroisiEurope is huge,” said Fair. “It is about working with as many agents as possible. One thing that has become abundantly clear is that we are almost the best-kept secret in the river cruise industry.” CroisiEurope’s destinations include rivers in Europe, the Mekong in Asia, the Zambezi in Africa and Canada’s eastern rivers.
