REUBEN’S RETREAT MISSION 123
Fundraiser Sarah Leah
talks to Samantha Mayling about the charity’s latest campaign, Mission 123, which launches next month
Reuben’s Retreat is urging the travel trade to think of “weird and wonderful” ways to turn £23 into as large a donation as possible. The fundraising campaign, called
Mission 123, is asking supporters to find a sponsor who will give them £23. The supporters then have 123 days to generate more cash from that stake. Sarah Leah, fundraiser at the charity,
said: “People can join together as a team – neighbours, friends, clubs or businesses – and come up with weird and wonderful ways to increase that £23. “We are open to any suggestions – as long
as they are safe and legal. People can raise money by doing car washes, selling items on eBay, buying the ingredients to make cakes to sell, entering a sponsored event, or anything entrepreneurial. “We want to
encourage people to have fun and develop a sense of camaraderie.” A Facebook page will be set up so participants can follow their fundraising efforts and see the progress of others. “We hope the
competitive element will encourage people – it can boost morale,” said Leah. “We will keep tabs on the amount raised in a league table and celebrate people’s
achievements with an awards evening to recognise the champions’ fundraising efforts, as well as their skills, talent and inspiration. Reuben’s Retreat was set up six years ago
by industry professionals Nicola and Mike Graham in memory of son Reuben who died of a rare brain tumour aged 23 months – so the figure of 23 has special resonance. The charity supports children who have
a life-limiting illness and their families, and is converting a former hospital in the Peak District into a retreat in Reuben’s name. Mission 123 launches on February 1 and will run until June 4. The charity will be holding other fundraising initiatives this year and its events calendar will see the return of popular sponsored challenges. “We have taken on two
more members of staff recently so we are planning lots of events,” said Leah. Supporters will be taking part in challenges such as the Edinburgh Marathon and Snowdon SunRaise – a walk to the summit of Snowdon at dawn. New for 2019 will be a zipline challenge in Snowdon. Leah added: “We welcome any support from the travel industry for these events.” To sign up or register

FLEXIBLE AUTOS TO GIVE BOOST TO MISSION 123
The Flexible Autos sales team will be on the road during January to encourage agents to take part in Mission 123. Sue Dixon, group managing director, and Julie Parsons, sales support manager, met the Reuben’s Retreat team in December to plan their strategy. For every agent the sales team visits, Flexible Autos will donate £5 to Reuben’s Retreat. The team will be wearing branded camouflage outfits as part of its aim to enlist as many agents as possible. The ‘Advance Army’, which is all 10 sales team members, will cover the whole of the UK, giving information about Mission 123 to each agent they see. Dixon said: “We met Nicola Graham and Sarah Leah at Reuben’s Retreat to see how we could best support them and help raise funds. “We offered to get our sales team out on the road, popping into agencies with a Boost chocolate bar for them – we all need sugar to get us through the busy month of January. “We will have branded clothing with
Reuben’s Retreat and Flexible Autos logos as we feel this will be the start of a fantastic relationship.”
