Culture
Sabah is full of culture, with interesting museums and local villages waiting to be explored. Recommend your customers hop on board the North Borneo Railway, the oldest railway on the island, which passes through old village communities and paddy fields. The town of Tamparuli is full of attractions, including the famous suspension bridge. There’s also an upside-down house that draws onlookers from far and wide, and right around the corner is the Chanteek Borneo Indigenous Museum, for those who want to find out more about the indigenous culture.
Stop over in Brunei
If your customers want to spend a few days in Brunei before flying to Sabah or onwards to Asia or Australasia, there are plenty of things they can do, whether they want to head into the unspoilt jungle, explore Brunei’s bustling neighbourhoods or visit the country’s historical sites.
The Kampong Ayer, or water village, is one of the most fascinating places in Brunei, with schools, shops and mosques all situated on the water. The best way to get about is by water taxi, and its location, just across the Brunei River in Bandar Seri Begawan, makes it easy to reach for those wanting to explore this unique settlement.
City Life
Sabah has some incredible cities, packed full of historical sites and attractions. The capital, Kota Kinabalu, is full of culture and is home to an ornate city mosque, which can welcome 12,000 worshippers at one time. There’s also a bustling Chinatown, which is well worth a visit for the interesting markets and delicious food. The second-largest city of Sandakan sits on the beautiful coastline and visitors can explore its stunning beaches, fascinating caves and cultural landmarks. Meanwhile, Tawau is surrounded by many parks and reserves nearby, and the Tanjung Market, in the city centre, is said to be the largest indoor market in Malaysia, with 6,000 stalls to browse.
The Ulu Temburong National Park should be high on your customers’ wish list if they want to head into the forest and spot some of the natural wildlife, including the rare proboscis monkey. Brunei is also home to some impressive and ornate mosques. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, for example, is surrounded by a lake in Brunei’s capital. The mosque has a gold-domed roof and a beautiful white exterior, making it one of the most stunning attractions in the country.
Brunei has some delicious cuisine, which can be sampled at various street markets across the capital. Your customers can eat with the locals at the Gadong Night Market in Bandar Seri Begawan, where there are a range of delicacies available to sample.
